Nippon Modus 3 Initial thoughts

Finally built my test 6 iron this week to try the modus 120.What i noticed at first is the ball seems to launch higher ,but seems to apex at the same height as my peening blue's and seemed flatter .Not sure if this is good or bad,but i did like the lighter weight. So, I decided to build rest of set and hopefully will have more feedback next week.

I know this isn't much info for now,Shoot questions as to what areas you want me to pay attention to for feedback.

I have been playing the Nippon Modus 3 for about a year now and it is the smoothest feeling steel shaft I have played. I find the trajectory to be similar to what you described. What I really like is that a well struck 5 iron will stay within 5 feet of the ball mark on the green where it lands. Unless I strike it poorly, or out of a flier lie, it gives me confidence that I can really go for a pin with any iron in my bag. Some say that it plays soft to flex, but I have found while that may be true, it can still handle a strong swing.

Been playing the 130's now for a few rounds. Love them. I am playing Stiff in 3-9i but I just put a X in my PW just to try it. Feels really really stout. They said the 130 is so much stiffer than the 120 they don't even offer a TX in the 130, I believe it.

I agree with the uber smooth feeling. Man are they money. I bought some blades just for the shafts but I hit them so good I actually switched to the blades they came in. (R7 TP's to 588 MB's) I can hit 4i / 5i blades no problem which to me was like whaaat?? Very controlled flight. It's like throwing darts anything under 6i. May have to switch it up to X for the rest, I get just a slight bit too much draw out of the stiffs, but I can hit a cut with them too which was very hard with the R7 TP's. For me the 130 performs similar as you describe, quick initial launch, flatter apex and no much release. But I don't zip back short irons anymore, they hit and stop about a foot. Longer irons release a little.

Just wrapped up my first season with the 120's.

Coming from KBS Tours they definitely launch the ball higher, faster and with a lot more spin. I like the feel of the shaft.

One thing I noticed, I can't tell if its because I'm getting old or the shafts, during 36 hole days my elbows felt a little sore when compared to previous 36 hole days with different shafts. I'll have another chance to do the 36ers in a couple months to determine if it was a one time thing or if it will always happen.

The 120's are stiff butt and stiff tip so you're going to feel the vibration more. KBS tour to me is a bit softer overall so you might have a valid concern. But there are all kinds of factors also like turf density, sleeping patters, length/play during season, etc. Or you're just getting old, haha.

didn't know that about the butt stiffness. it was day of that I felt the pain so the sleep wouldn't be a concern.

Took my new Modus3 S120 out tonight against my DGS300's.

The Modus out performed the DG in every category. Longer, higher, lands softer, tighter, and by far the best feeling.

Way smooth.

The Modus 3's in either 120 or 130 do not play soft to flex, people just get the idea from the shafts being so smooth that the feel makes you think they are softer than stated flex.

Best shafts i've hit ever. (for me of course :derisive: )

The 120's have a soft butt , stiff tip. The butt is softer then x100. The 130's have a stiffer butt soft tip .

I play the super preening blue in x and ordered the modus 120 also in x.
My ball speeds with 6 iron are between 121-126.tempo,I'd guess average . I'll ask my playing partners

The Modus3 120's actually are butt-soft, tip-stiff. Most people like the feel of the soft butt section, feels smoother to them. But these will flight the ball lower and with less spin than the KBS Tours according to most tests I've seen.

That said, the Modus3 also make my elbows and shoulders ache more than KBS Tours. But I AM getting old so IDK, may not be the shafts.

Got some 712MBs coming with Modus3 120 in x-flex. Should be there on monday or tuesday i guess. I'm coming from some DG S300's and the modus felt way better in the fitting, also like that they are a bit lighter as well! Will be interesting to see how they perform on course!

your statement on the modus3 v. kbs is interesting to me. I came from kbs to the modus and my numbers were higher in both spin and launch with the modus. length was different between the two so that might be a factor.

might put the kbs back into another set i have around to see how they react.

As a guy with a smooth 85mph 6iron, I found the 120 Stiff to be demanding in one sense: They required a specific release from me. The "speed window" seemed narrow. I could only feel them load if I released the club hard and late.

This may only apply to me. For now, I'm in the 1150s and finding more forgiveness.

Must be how you load the shaft, as I did not find this issue. Very smooth feeling shaft. I also found them to launch alittle higher and stop quickly on the greens.

quot; The flex chart is provided on their website, you can see the difference to "regular" shafts which I think would be a DG profile. The 120's are stiff butt and stiff tip so you're going to feel the vibration more. KBS tour to me is a bit softer overall so you might have a valid concern. But there are all kinds of factors also like turf density, sleeping patters, length/play during season, etc. Or you're just getting old, haha.

The 120's have a soft butt , stiff tip. The butt is softer then x100. The 130's have a stiffer butt soft tip .
[/quote]They may be slightly softer than DG but I wouldn't label them "Butt soft.&

My swing is alittle like Phil Mickelson's, but a 8 handicap version. too much wrist hinge, arms continue to travel after shoulder turn has stopped, leading to a past parallel swing, and a mid to late release.

If it's any consolation, Mickelson looks like an 8 from time to time... :-)

It sounds like the later release is better suited to the Modus than the 1150 due to the stiffer tip, so I am leaning that way for the new set. Thanks for the reply.

I was hoping to pick up a 6 iron shaft yesterday from Golfworks but they have sold out of all Modus 3 shafts. I'm definitely interested in trying the 120, from what i'm reading it looks like it could be a really good fit for me.

The Modus 120 feels softer and flexes in the mid section so the stiffer profiles still feel smooth. The 130 is so stiff you need to go the opposite, if you play X100, may want to check out the 130 Stiff. 130 X is only for really hard transitioners. But man is it great for us!

Wanted to add this link, hopefully it's ok. Great review of the Modus tour 130. (Actually the prototype 2G18 but that is the exact same profile as the retial 130.)

Interesting. Thanks for the link Mark. I may just get one of both the 120 and 130 and go from there.
