The Wizard Short Game Technique Videos(merged)

Iteach,

My round of golf just finished a couple of hours ago and the first thing I wanted to do was to find this thread and post my comment.

I had watched your 'tight lies' video from page 1 of this thread last Sunday and practiced it just once on the range for 2 hours before my round today. And proceeded to literally play the best round of my 4-year golfing life.

We had a 3 teams, each with 4 players, and we played stableford points. And I scored the highest, at 40+ points. Also had my handicap reduced by 2 strokes as a result.

As it turned out, I pretty much carried my team to win, despite being the highest handicapper.

In contrast, my previous 2 games before your video I played so badly that my handicap was increased by 1 stroke, and I could not even break 100. Today I broke 90.

If it sounds like I am boasting, I must clarify, I am absolutely not claiming any credit for the result of my game today. All credit goes to you, iteach, and your short game method.

My reaction after the game was, I gotta find a way to pay Dan Carraher some money for this. He just won me some money today! This is a welcome change because the group plays every week and I have been bleeding cash at an alarming rate.

So, Dan, thank you. Sincerely. You have stopped the bleeding.

If your introductory video was so good, I can't wait to buy the full video, will attempt to do so despite the reported kinks above. If it doesn't work out, will keep checking this thread until the kinks are worked out and try again.

My observations from my experience with this from today's round - it felt quite different and a bit alien initially because it was so different from how I normally load and release. But it was so logical that it was easy to figure out. Playing with it for the first time ever today, I duffed my chip on two holes. And was able to diagnose what went wrong, fixed it, and played with it effectively for the rest of the round. Also chunked my first bunker shot, and fixed it thereafter with no further issues. So, because it is so logical, it was easy for my mind to accept even with the lack of practice. The safety margin that has been mentioned is a definite plus. You don't have to catch the ball cleanly.

So, full endorsement from me all the way from the far east for the short game video from iteach, Dan Carraher. Count me your latest student.

iteach,

Is there another way to make payment to you?

I am from Malaysia, and I tried the method you suggested above of putting US as the country, but I got the 'looks like you shanked it' page. I think the credit card system verifies the address given as a security check, and putting US does not work for me.

Please let me know, thanks.

Forward ball position simply moves the ball up near low point. IF it's not working it means either low point is too far back or the club head is coming off the target line to quickly. I'm guessing it happens when you rehinge the club. The key is understanding that you want low point around the golf ball and not too far in front of it. Multiple ways to accomplish that I just layed out what I feel is the simplest for the largest group of people. Try moving the ball up and making sure the left hand in followthrough is far away from your left hip/side and club head stays below your hands. The way I teach it the more aggressive you get and the more you extend towards the target the better the outcome which then encourages confidence and eliminates club head passing the hands too soon
Thanks Dan. Just gave it a try at home on some tight carpet and it seems to help if I really focus on keeping the club head below the hands on the follow through. I'll keep working on it, but that does help!
I am on the lounge room chipping green as well….and having trouble reaching the ball…and it feels like I am catching everything thin…can't find the sweet spot.

Dan, when you say a common problem is with the 'club head is coming off the target line to quickly', does that mean a) too far to the inside on backswing OR b) to far off the ground on the backswing OR c) too far off the ground on follow thru?
Follow through. Keep clubhead below your hands and hands extended away from your left side in follow through. No Rehinging and no letting arms pull in and close. Wide and clubhead low to ground in finish

Keeping the clubhead low made a big difference for me today, so thank you again Dan.

My next question: shots tend to come off very high and soft with this method, which most of the time is great, but on longer pitch shots (15-25 yards) where a high trajectory may not be ideal, would you suggest taking a lower lofted wedge and using the same technique rather than putting the ball back in the stance?

Yes that is the far better option than playing it back in the stance. Minimize the number of variables changed to create the most predictable result
Awesome. I have to tell you, bunker play is the weakest area of my game by far. I'm at 35% sand saves for the year, and only because I had a couple rounds early in the season where I was in a few bunkers each day and happened to pull them all off. I think I'm 0 for my last 6 or 7 attempts....it's bad. Anyway, got in the practice bunker this morning using your principles and promptly lipped out 2 of my first 6, with 3 of the other balls inside 5 feet. I can't tell you how happy it made me to have something work so easily and quickly. The long, shallow divot with hands staying low through the ball is just too easy! The ball came out much higher and softer than normal. I Love it! Thank you again Dan

so i can watch the video streaming anywhere? can i download the files on my iphone?
how do the online lessons work?
Yes you will be able get the files to your iPhone. I have already transferred them to my iPad and iPhone after downloading them to my computer.

Film your swing from face on and down the line using iPhone, upload to Dans space on AthleteNation, and he will provide a 5-7minute commentary on how to improve your swing.

Maybe I'm being obtuse, but I can't see a difference between the normal bunker shot and the long bunker shot with a lob wedge
While there is width in both watch again. The difference is in the height the sand is splashed and the direction (more up vs. out). In one the club head comes out the ground relatively fast with sand splashed up. The other, club head stays in the ground longer with sand being splashed more out forward than up. Get in a bunker and trying and you will see the difference in trajectory and carry distance

Dan, or others familiar with his teaching: would you recommend any changes in firm, wet sand? The kind of sand where it takes effort to rake? I find that using bounce this way makes the club bounce off the sand and into the ball blading it into the lip or over the green pretty much every time.

I'm fairly confident I'm executing the swing properly as I get great results from tight lies and rough, bunker play isn't working though at my course that has really firm sand.

To those from out of the US put your address and then just choose a US state. Glad others could help while I was busy.

Works for me.

Dan - any plans for a full swing video? I'd pre-order now if so!
No plans as variables are far to great. Players aren't good at prioritizing let alone identifying their flaws. I rather do online lesson though it's more work and less money so each individual gets something specific to them.

Look at buried lie video. Just not as extreme. Wet sand is heavier and harder to get through. So you have to be steeper with more speed to get through it and stay in it long enough.

That is a great question, thanks jut111.

We get that kind of bunker a lot over here because of the tropical weather.

So if I understand correctly Dan, its sort of midway in between a normal bunker shot and a buried lie bunker shot. Slightly more descending than a normal bunker shot in order to get the club face to get sufficiently under the sand, and slightly more force in order to splash the heavier wet sand out.

Is that understanding correct?
Dan, what type of lob shots do you advocate using the trail edge of the bounce as oppose to the mid bounce or front edge of the bounce?
My wedge has the peak bounce in the middle of the sole for a reason, and thats because I want the middle of the sole to hit the ground. Besides most people can't hit the ground in the same place let alone manipulate what part of the sole hits that same part of the ground. The bounce should peak in the middle of the sole and that is the part of the club you should use. As laid out in the videos you can hit a ball that goes almost vertical and a ball that goes 30-40 yards and checks. The key to consistency is predictability. And predictability comes from changing the fewest variables between shots while getting the desired outcome. I believe that's exactly what these videos accomplish, predictability and consistency. There are other ways to hit the shots but not as constantly without changing a bunch of things, and there fore not as predictable of an outcome.

Exactly. The sand provides more resistance, just like a buried lie, but in a different way.

I worked through the tight lies, flop and bunker videos today and spent some time at the range this afternoon. The bunker videos were a revelation and for the first time in quite a while I could hit shots that weren't either a hitler or a weapons grade uranium shell. With the flop shot I did hit quite a few on the hosel though, especially when I wanted to hit it really high. I suspect the I got a bit steep on them, but will keep on experimenting.
