stupid, STUPID low spin / low launch shafts for high swing speeds

RedSide

Recommended Posts

Need some shaft recommendations for another high ball hitter. A little about me: scratch golfer and aspiring longdriver that struggles with launch and spin numbers with the driver. Currently playing a PX8a4 and not getting the desired ball flight that Im looking for. Always wanted to try a Rombax 7z08, but alas, they are discontinued, therefore, hard to get ahold of. Anything similar to that shaft, and am I on the right track to think that shaft will do the job? TIA.

Try a Aldila Phenom NL 70 TX

I put that in a SuperDeep head and then I played croquet with it..

Was like the golf course was a hockey rink... Low, flat, laser beams all day long... When you can nut it

I have a x7a3 in a 9015D that is tipped about 2.0" and feels like rebar. I really have to go after it, but spin seems very low. Might be worth trying to tip your PX shaft and see where that gets you. Whats your SS?

What head are you putting the shaft in? I have an Adams 9032LD in 7.5* that I use with an HoF Proto HD shaft. I have used the Proforce V2 96 in the past and it is low launching and super smooth. Currently gaming the Axivcore Black 89x and spin is low, but flight is mid. I too am a high ball hitter.

Would try out the long drive standard House of Forged. They make standard driver shafts as well.

If you like a bit more weight (judging by the current ~80g shaft you have) just get a Motore Speeder TS 8.2x. Absolute spin killer, low low launch.

A bag of left-handed junk.

If you're a long drive kind of guy with fast clubhead speed and power you need to go heavy and ultra stiff. I suggest these: Throttle LDA, ProtoPYPE, p9003x, Axivcore Green, Aldila XPP8 VooDoo, YSQst 75x, RIP Alpha 80x, Whiteboard 83x, BiMatrix Proto, HD8xx, HD10xx, Graffalloy 1027 proto, Rombax TP90x, Rombax TP80x, 7Z08, GD PM702x, GD PM902x, etc. If you spin those too much or launch too high then you need to worry about Angle of Attack.

And to all these Angle of Attack guys, that isn't the answer to 100% of all the questions on here. You're not going to completely change a swing so everyone can play the same shaft. That is why they make different shafts, swings are different. If you can fit into a low/low shaft and get desired results then why recommend a swing change?

I'll second whoever said the Aldila NL 70x. I have the 70s and it hits the ball crazy low compared to anything else I've tried, and I've tried a lot of whats listed above in maybe lighter weights and softer flexes.

It depend on what weight range who is your target, but if you can go down, Grafalloy TOUR is what you seek. Its a True Temper Performance Fitting Center exclusive, and as S flex its close to both Rombax 7Z08-X and Tour AD-Di X and as X flex its even stronger and lower launching. Here is zone flex numbers from Tom Wishon. (Never mind value at 41" if you play it 45" or shorter, then most of this part is cut of when but cutting the shaft down to play length)

If PX 8A4 is your weight range, and flight a tad high, tip it. Flex will not get much stronger, but launch will be lower for a late release player.

According to the GD site, the UT and DI for hybrids is supposed to be mid/high launch, but they are both pretty low launching for me. Absolutely love them in driving irons. Would love to try that Grafalloy Tour X.

Love my 7z08 shaft but I don't think moving from the PX 8A4 will drop the launch and spin as much as you think. The 7z08 feels a hell of a lot better though.

I'm a longdrive guy, the shaft that works for me if you can find it, is a Fuji tour spec 9.2x tipped an inch. It works in an 8 degree head for me, and my ld setups are usually 4.5 - 5.5 degree 3-4x hof shafts. If you launch this setup high, you are flipping and adding loft and spin.

Axe Tour 6 in Tour stiff flex. Please see numbers. You won't find anything stiffer in the lower 16" of the shaft.

lots of good info here guys, thanks. I'm playing the PX in a 7.5* 910d3 and SS is in the mid 120's although my sports sensor SS radar says ~130, but i dont think thats right... Dont know ball speed or launch angle. I hit it fairly well BUT the launch and apex is still too high imo. I have no LM data to confirm this so I may just stick with this setup for awhile, and I also dont have the $ for an exotic $300+ shaft. This may just be a user error and not an equipment problem, but man how nice it would be to band-aid a shaft fix and hit some low bullets that roll 100yds for a change...

How much to tip? What are the recommendations eg., 1/2" = 3' apex etc.
Thx

To get what?....8A4 is as stiff as it gets from PX tip side, and like other Graphite shafts, we dont do much to flex by tip trim, but we do reduce tip length, and by that lower launch a bit, so where do you want to go?
- If you where Iron Byron, 1 CPM or 2/8 would lower apex by 1 Foot, so it takes 3 CPM to lower it 1 yard and thats about 3/4

Tom Wishons fantastic software dont have specs on 8A4, but i made a compare of Deflection tip and butt side of all PX Ti models VS Fujikura Speeder. Deflection is measured as drop in millimeter with a certain load. - Less it drops, stiffer it is, lower it launches. All specs on PX is from True Temper, while specs on Speeder is from Fujikura, so i did not measure them myself.
