Ok. Some people are strange and don't know how to keep boundaries.....but is it possible that this guy thinks you're bigger buddies than you do?

My take is that this guy feels that you're friends. Build on that.
100% this.

Oh, and you have ZERO to gain by going to your boss.
Well we are absolutely best buds now, almost like Eskimo brothers of sorts. Honestly I'll probably bring it up the next time I see him and ask him if he's got any new sticks for me to test drive. Hopefully he leves his car parked at the bag drop with the keys in it because he drives a sweet BMW. I'll take it for a spin and tell him we are even!
Congrats. When the Head Pro pulls and oopsie and gets drunk and says inappropriate things to a cart girl and get canned.....Your new best buddy will be pushing you for the job. It's a Win-Win.

Years ago while in the shop, I had a member come up to me and pinch the fabric of my slacks between his fingers. He said:" these feel nice, would you mind if I borrowed them off you for my round this aft? There's just too many mosquitos out there."

After a long pause, I told him I'd sell them to him but I'm not interested in him borrowing them. He agreed to $40 and I went and grabbed a pair of shortS from the office and off he went. I'd bought those slacks at Value Village (a thrift store in Calgary) for $5 the week before.

THIS IS A TRUE STORY I SWEAR!

The one time that being a lefty pays off. No one is ever looking into my bag or using my gear. Except my father in law. He's lefty too so we usually share. I walk up without a putter to the green, I just use his. Or I will say have a whack with my new driver or whatever. But never would I imagine just grabbing someones sticks like that. Mine aren't even that crazy or exotic or super expensive, but I put A LOT of time into my bag and getting what I want and dialed in and what not.

I would say that was pretty ballsy to say the least. Touching another mans clubs is right up there with messing with is wife or girlfriend!

I understand your postion thou and sometimes discretion is a better part of valor.

HOWEVER, if you ever want some pay back, and he is on a practice putting green, slip an old club into his bag, call out to him and ask if the guy ever SPARK TESTED his clubs. Then proceed to pull out the old club from the bag taking some good cuts off the pavement!

I am sure the look on his face would be worth framing!!! I did this to my brother years ago when I was still in the army and passing through on vacation. I told his two buds what I was going to do, it was all they could do to keep from wetting themself.

The best advice I ever heard was for a golf pro to not play or practice at his own club. The members do not know that you are not "on the clock" and assume that you are just goofing off.
That's a very interesting observation.

I don't know a thing about being a golf professional, but I have a feeling that to be a club pro you have a pretty challenging life. Probably sounds great to those of us who dream of going to the course every day and getting paid for it, but I've got a suspicion that when it comes down to it being a customer is probably a lot more fun. Which brings me to feel sympathy for the pro, who after working long hours often doing stuff he doesn't really like that much . . . has to go somewhere else to hit a ball or two -- which was probably the reason he wanted to be a pro in the first place.

A couple buddies are playing a match and on #18 they are all square. It's a long dog-leg left par 5, and Bob tries to cut the corner and hits his drive long but left and the ball ends up on the cart path. Ted hits a mediocre drive down the middle but can't reach in two. He hits a reasonable lay-up leaving 120 in, and he says, "Looks like I'm gold". Bob pulls a club, sets up and hits an incredible shot off the cart path that sends sparks flying everywhere, and the ball lands 20 ft from the pin and rolls to 4 ft. Ted says, "Wow! What did you hit there?" Bob says, "Your 5 iron".

While that might be true, when ever we see one of our pros on the range hitting balls we assume he is not on the clock. It is none of our business to take employee matters into our own hands unless it is egregious. If he is on the clock, eventually, it will all catch up to him.

You all do realize that MOST golf professionals are salaried right?

They are ALWAYS on the clock. That is the reason they are NOT at their own golf course on their day(s) off.

Our ideology goes against that completely since us in the shop are encouraged to play with members and make judicial use of the facility when we can. Being a destination golf course we try to make our membership feel just as welcome as vacationers.

Are you a golf professional? Ever known what at a CC or Named Resort?

If you are salaried, and are on the premises of work...you are "on the clock" and can/will be assumed as working. Try turning a member/guest away as a salaried golf professional, and see how long you stay a golf professional.

Nope, not a golf pro.

One should treat their customers, no matter the industry, as they should be treated respectfully, on or off site, on the clock or off. To go up to a golf pro who is obviously working on their game and to think they are on the clock is bad form in my opinion...but a golf pro will and should act respectfully in this situation, just like they will and should if they are on the clock.

This reminds me of story I read last night about Henrik Stenson's caddie finding a replacement 4 wood when he caved in the face of his. They caddie asks the pro he is staying with if he has any of the same woods in the shop. Pro says "no" so they apparently go searching through the bags in the bagroom, find a Callaway 4 wood, STEAL IT, and give it to Stenson. They said the member got a new 3 and 4 wood but that still seems crappy to me. I have an old 3 wood in my bag. I wouldn't let anybody just "have" it.

Here's a range story:
Today I was on the chipping area, which is behind and to the left of the full swing range. The chipping area consists of a green set up for a 0 - 10 yd chip. Like I said, the chipping green is behind the golfers hitting full shots on the big range. I was hitting a few chip shots when a guy on the full swing range suddenly pivots 90* to his left and starts firing 100+ yard wedge shots over my head to the pitching green. When his first shot landed I turned around behind me to see who was shooting over my head. The guy just acted like no big deal, but he caught my look and hit a couple more before he hid behind a cart.

haha - too funny. I didn't take the time to read everyone's posts, but I would probably just mention it to my boss as an FYI in case any members had the same or similar incidents on the range. I'm not sure what your situation is with clubs (if they are your clubs, staff set or what), but I'm the same way about taking care of my clubs and might not let just anyone hit them. I'm an assistant pro at our facility and I do let people try mine since my clubs are a staff set and I'm trying to encourage people to support our shop.... that being said I would encourage someone who might be able to play them reasonably well.... there's no point in me letting a 20+ handicap try my driver and leave a nice mark on top. Actually I probably would let them... I'd just make sure to tee it up for them... low...

Something similiar happened to me recently. Juniors, like me, are offered group lessons in our golf club and since it is winter now we moved to a indoor practice facility. Obviously, anoyne is supposed to bring his own clubs right? Well one of my colleagues didnt get that and appeared without clubs. I dont know him really well and suddendly he approaches my bag and starts hitting my irons. After that he just lays my club on the ground and takes my driver and starts hitting it with the smallest tee i've ever seen. Felt uberwierd to me, seeing someone shanking my beloved clubs around
