That's crazy. Basically $35 per round and they throw in breakfast, lunch, and lodging for free. Makes me wish I didn't live 10 miles away so I could go on a golfing trip for peanuts.

That is a good deal. 20's and snowing in SC?
It happens once every couple of years. You wake up, play in the snow, eat breakfast, then get dressed to go play 9 because the snow's already melted.

Wow that is insane. They are resorting to giving golf away there... I would be all over that if I didn't live in Pawleys Island! That is a crazy deal, but that is why they are known as the Walmart of golf. Cheap prices, long lines and bad service...

I'll pull out the first one that comes to mind. 845 tee time, show up before 8 to hit the range before our round. We hit the bag drop, park, and then come back and can't find our clubs anywhere on the racks of 50 bags. After my mini heart attack I see we have already been loaded up on carts. A cart attendant comes up and asks us if we are ready to go early. We say no we are going to hit the range and putt some first because we still have over half hour. He gets frustrated and walks away. We hop in the cart and head to the range only to be confronted by a different gentleman for taking the carts over. He tells us to drive back and we tell the man no one told us different and we were just going to hit range balls and to drive all the way back to the drop and then walk back over would be silly and a waste of time. He mumbles something and speeds off. We grab clubs and start to hit balls. 10 minutes later the gentleman comes back and tells us they are getting ready to send us because our tee time was approaching so we had to go back to the drop. Still being about 25-30 minutes early we are starting to just get angry at the crazy push to the tee box and decide to just go tee off. The starter waiting at Moorland then told us it would be a little bit because the tee wasn't open yet, but they could probably send us off Parkland now, which we had already played a couple days before. We waited for the Moorland box while we could have been putting... Needless to say the awesome 5 1/2 hour round that followed really made up for the enjoyable greeting.

I used to live right there and the convenience of having those courses right there outweighed the bad experiences so we would still play for the cheap prices. Now that I live in Pawleys I would never drive up to play there unless it was free. Sorry.

I agree with everything you say and I've played many 5+ hour rounds there however the price to course conditions are in my opinion the best in the area. As a local I try to avoid the high traffic times
Played behind 2 fivesomes today....lol...they played quick and we finished in 4 1/2 hours
And the cart lady was smashed, sh** faced drunk....!!!!
She tried giving my buddy tips on how to get out of the bunker, she was loud, obnoxious, stumbling around the cart and literally fell over. I was shocked yet entertained by her stupidity.

i agree 100%. It's amazing that they're able to keep the courses looking as good as they do with the amount of traffic they get.

I will absolutely agree that the conditions at the courses are very good. Definitely do a good job taking care of the courses, but I just can't do it after all of the long rounds and shotty service. Isn't worth the ride up 501

Sorry to hear these stories about Legends. The last time I was there was probably 4-5 years ago. The "factory" feel was certainly there, as were the 5-hour rounds, but there was always something about Legends I loved. It felt like an immersive golf campus. Comfortable places to eat, where you could stay for a few days and not have to leave if you didn't want to. Add to that the fact that Moorland is one of my favorite courses - well, it's just too bad that the overcrowded conditions have been exacerbated by poor service now.

 • 1 month later...

I've played three course from the Legend lineup. My two cents, twice I had an earlier tee time(one time I was first off), 4 and 4.25 hr rounds. Third time I had a later tee time and it was close to 5.5 hrs.

Obviously they stack the course up tight. I plan on taking my golf trip there in April. I booked the earliest tee times I could reserve.

I'll stick up for legends. We've been going to Myrtle for 18 years, and been up and down the strip. We went back to legends for First time in 5-6 years last March. We had first tee times each day, played a different course each day for 5 days and replays on 3 days.

Service was always good on the course and in the clubhouse with one exception. The "loaders" at Heritage told our guys to move their asses when they pulled in 20 minutes before tee time, and not in a nice way. We had 3 foresomes and two were there 30-35 minutes ahead of tee time. I complained at lunch and we got discounted replays.

The customer service at Oyster Bay was as good as I've ever got in Myrtle. We are fairly fast Golfers so we had some short waits making the turn due to double teeing. Still played in about 4/12 hours each morning and they got us out for replays each afternoon, and in time to finish before dark..

There's definitely a ton of Golfers but the courses are nice and in great shape, and they do decent job keeping it moving through the factory. We will definitely go back.

Sometimes it's not possible to make money (such as during the really slow periods in MYR) so the key is losing less money. Maintenance and staff are mostly fixed costs, so there's relatively little incremental cost to putting golfers out there - so ANY revenue is better than no revenue.

I completely understand the "one in the hand, two in the bush" concept, but the problem is they are devaluing their product. They fill their tee sheets with the low prices but now that that is what they are known for they will not be able to leave that pricing structure.

I don't think so. Who would expect that type of pricing in any other season? That's like suggesting that theaters won't be able to charge full-price in the evenings because they charge less for matinees, or that a hotel on the Maine coast won't be able to charge peak summer prices because they charge next to nothing in January or February.

I agree with you both. I think where Bruin is coming from is that anytime of year, Legends has some very reasonable packages. Most include meals, drinks, and lodging (and while the value of such things can be argued), it does kind of set a precedent that might be hard to get away from in the future. 4/5 rounds, without meals and drinks or lodging, at one price point, might not be as tempting if you can get 4 rounds at Barefoot for nominally more, or maybe at another resort. the pricing slides for the season, but the basic strategy remains the same, offer more rounds and perks (meals, drinks, lodging) than the competition.

I think the point he was making was, in general, they are using a strategy(pricing, perks, rounds) to get golfers, that they might not be able to exit.

I'll be honest, it hooked me. I am taking a group down in April. it was easy to book, don't have to worry about two meals, and we have 5 tee times. and if we want to replay, that seems like a good option.

Yes that is my point exactly. Yes this deal is abnormally low even for them, but even when busy season is in full swing down here they are quite a bit lower than anyone else in the area and they offer you golf, a buffet, a 6 pack, and a mail order bride. It is actually quite a common joke among people who actually live down here because throughout the year it is so cheap to play there. IMO they won't ever really be able to successfully leave that setup, which I am assuming is their plan... Still scratch my head at how long it can last before SOMETHING gives.
