How can you tell if you've messed up a shaft?

So I did something stupid.

Had a diamana kai'li (real) with 910h adapter on it.

I yanked the adapter (using a vice that clamps on to my countertop to hold the shaft) without using a shaft puller. Just very gradual with the heat until I could see the epoxy start to break and then pulled it off with a pair of pliers covered in a soft cloth.

Since I don't know what I'm doing, I didn't get all the excess epoxy off the shaft right away. I sanded it off but some of the epoxy took a few chunks of paint with it, and the graphite started to 'fray' a little bit on the tip (solution: more sanding!).

How do I know if I've borked this thing beyond any usefulness? If I get it put in a club will it just feel weird, break quickly...or....?

It would be more helpful if you could post a pic but if you have fraying that doesn't sound good.

Definitely need pics to tell. But you could always trim .25" or a bit more (probably even up to .5") from the tip. The flex and ball flight won't be significantly different.

Pics in this auction - note to mods this is not an active auction. I just don't have locally stored copies of the pictures any longer and this is easy.

Need some pictures of the shaft in it's current condition to really be useful.

Generally speaking you can tell if you've messed a shaft up if you made a thread in here asking if the shaft is messed up, especially if you start said thread with "So I did something stupid."

Edit: Though in all seriousness, we need pics.[/size]

Hey full disclosure is in the pics....the market consensus seems to be that I did mess it up because...yeah, it didn't sell.

Again this was an adapter pull so I didn't seem the same risk in messing it up as I would have with a shafted clubhead. So has anyone looked at the pics and if so does it look fubar?

Why wouldn't you see the same risk? You are still applying heat and didn't use the puller. Once you heated it to the point of seeing the epoxy break down I would guess you damaged the shaft. The whole point of a shaft puller is to break the bond using minimal heat. I have never seen any epoxy breakdown using my shaft puller. I certainly wouldn't buy this shaft nor would would I try and sell it.

Yep, asking if you messed up is generally a hint that you did... :swoon:

Based on the pics it looks OK to me. You could scrape it down a bit more as Arnie mentioned above. DON'T grind it more to get the epoxy off. It may look a little rough but you could always take .25" off and it will be fine without affecting the playability.

I wouldn't put this shaft in a club for a customer but would have no problem trying it for myself or as a demo.

I shouldn't have put it up for listing given that I wasn't sure if it's screwed or not. No more ebay...gonna wait around for a tempting 5w head and see how it goes from there.

That is an understatement. You obviously had a question of if it was "ok" or not. Full disclosure isn't always in the pictures, because honestly, the fake grass looks like it is more in focus than the shaft. Next time make sure you actually disclose what you are selling. Consider yourself lucky to not have to deal with a paypal dispute for someone that was unhappy with its condition when it arrived.

I had always thought most of the risk of damaging a shaft was in twisting the shaft (by not pulling it off straight) while the graphite is hot and pliable, not from damage due to the heat itself. I am probably wrong.

So, OK - the question itself. Is there any way to tell if its been impaired short of it flat out breaking when I try to use it?
