I'm probably crazy (MP60's)

I was killing a little time yesterday and went into a Nevada Bob's and as I was wandering around what did I see? A set of used lefty MP60's way in the back of the store. They were in very good condition and priced at $199.Project X 5.5's and like new grips. At first I didn't think too much about them because I struggle with my I20's at times. The owner said if I was interested I could have them for $150. SOLD! I figure for $150 I got nothing to lose. I hit a few 8 irons in my yard when I got home and I actually hit them better than my I20's and I haven't played for 6 weeks. My name is Dave, and I'm a club Ho.

My twin! LOL. I'm not a lefty though...

But seriously....I played Ping for a few years straight then hit a Mizuno and it was all over. Been playing them the past two years, but recently picked up a set of i20s. But in the back of my mond, something tells me I won't like them as much. I still have my MP32s and had them reshafted once this past year. I am moving to reg flex and really don't want to drop another $300 in that set. I am really enamored by the MP64s right now. Too much club for me, but you only live once and might as well like what you play...

Smart choice. Any mizuno forged clubs are a good investment, and if you ever feel like hitting them, you'll always have them. I had a chance to buy a set o mp 32's for 150, but my dad was still deciding. We went back the next day, and they were one. I wish I had a chance to me those. But eventually, I still got my forged fix when I bought a set of hogan ftx's a month ago. They are some sweet irons. Nice buy......and you never know, you may improve playing those mp 60's. There are some stories of people getting better ball contact when they used less forgiving irons.

What's funny is I had a set of 2009 Cally X-Forged and the I20's at the same time. I actually hit the Cally's more consistent than my fitted I20's.Makes no sense at all.

Hi Dave. My name is Justin and I too am burdened by the daily need to look for, investigate, troll, research, purchase, use, and sell all things golf.

I had a set of MP 60's with Nippon shafts. Loved them. I felt the 'urge' to upgrade recently. Love my JPX 800 Pros with Nippon Modus 3 shafts, but still pine for my MP 60's.

That being said I was in Golf Smith last night ogling over MP 54's, MP 64's, JPX 825 Pros, some of the Titleist MB's, Titleist CB's, and my newest obsession, the Adams CMB's. Oh, and they had a really nice set of FG Tours with KBS Tour shafts. Sweet.

I'll probably go back again tonight and........ to be continued.....

Awesome set of irons......had them in the bag for over a year. Having said that, in real world conditions on the course the i20's are so much more forgiving it's not even funny. Par 3, over water from 180 yds..........give me my i20 6 iron.

If you are unsure about carrying a hazard, just club up one. If you shank it into the water, no club will help.

haha, so that's an answer for someone wanting to play more forgiving clubs? Club up...over a hazard...and it you catch it right you fly 15 yards or the green...

MP60's are a a great feeling club - yet I'm not sure they are mizunos most forgiving cavity in the world. I played them a few years ago. Don't get it twisted though, if you struggle with the i20s, then your honeymoon with the 60's will end rather quickly ;)

somaplr, why do you always seem to hate any thread that goes against your beloved i20s?

Did you have a bad break up with forged clubs or something? Shortbutstr8 was simply saying that if you shank it, no club will help, no even the i20....

Are you still trying to tell everyone that all fairway woods have a lower COG than hybrids? Because that was a fun thread. Are you mad at me? I apologize.

Where is the hate in this thread? I saw MP60 (I still have them) and i20s. That is a reference point. And gee, I have experience playing both. If you are going to argue that the MP60's are more forgiving than the i20s, then I don't even know what to tell you and you've never hit both side by side on multiple occassions. I never said the MP60's wouldn't work for this gentleman, I was pointing out that if you're looking for more forgiveness, it's not the way to go.

I could care less what brand is on the club - I broke out my MP32's over the weekend just for kicks b/c it was after GHIN season and I turn in all my scores. I have absolutely ZERO brand loyalty. I chime in on a lot of Mizuno threads and alot of of i20 threads...because you know what, I've always played Mizunos - and I love them.

I'm more referring to slight mishits........miss it by 0.25" on an MP 60 and you'll lose 15 yards........closer to 5 with my i20's. If I club up and catch the MP60 flush it'll be long, if I don't club up and slightly mishit it I'm in the water.

In regard to a shank, quite honestly the MP60's are a little better for those as clubs with less offset don't shoot as far right because the hosel doesn't stick out as far......I have some experience with this :)

Not saying the MP60's are bad.......as a matter of fact they are the 2nd best feeling irons I've hit with the MP32's being 1st, I just don't have the game to consistently hit a dime size sweetspot, wish I did because they are beautiful irons.

According to Titleist (not mizuno, but still a fair report) (http://www.titleist.com/teamtitleist/team-titleist/f/7/t/23274.aspx):

"We have found that the average loss of carry distance when you are 1/4" off-center for AP1 is 2.3 yards, AP2 is 2.4 yards, and CB/MB is 3.5 yards. The average loss of carry distance when you are 1/2" off-center for AP1 is 7.2 yards, AP2 is 7.6 yards, and CB/MB is 10 yards."

So, hitting .25" off the center will only give you a 3.5 yard loss. This leads to my point that people over exaggerate the loss of distance and unforgiveness of a forged blade. Yes, there is a greater loss for mishits, but not 15-20 yards as people state on here.

Just telling you my real world experience. It might be a confidence thing which lets me put a better swing on the ball. And in all honesty, I can't believe that the difference of a mishit with a 712mb versus an AP1 is only 1.2 yards........maybe on a robot but I've hit the AP1, AP2 and MB's and there is quite a bit of difference in terms of forgiveness and flight between the 3.

I'm certainly not under the illusion that these MP60's are close to being forgiving, but I think I'm a little strange when it comes to the type of player I am. My handicap fluctuates between a 10 -13. I am not a great iron ball striker but it seems like if I'm playing well,I can play well with anything and if I'm not I can suck with anything. I drive the ball straight, chip well, and putt real well. I'm not long so I hit a lot of hybrids and most of the irons I hit are 7 irons and below. I've played everything from KZG blades to Ping G15's and my handicap stays about the same. Also,I've gotten to the age I really don't have to impress anyone and I play golf for one reason and one reason only. To have fun.

Hi Dave...........

You did the right thing, can't take the family out to a nice dinner for under $150.00. Being a lefty I am sure makes it that much harder to score sweet deals.

Why do these threads have to end up in a heated debate. The guy is excited about finding these clubs and a pissing match about forgiveness breaks out. Must be the short days, lack of sunshine and after work golf.

Thanks. I've always have wanted a set of Mizunos but they just don't give us lefties a lot to choose from and I wasn't going to spend a ton of money on something I might play for 4 or 5 rounds. But if I end up liking them, who knows?

I think I paid 600 for the first set of mp-60 I bought, and I was getting a good deal at the time. Same shaft px 5.5 half inch over.
I loved those clubs, deadly accurate,'sweet soft mizuno feel, and a little easier to hit than the mp-32 I had, as I considered a combo set, but ended up selling the 32 before they got beatup. I have no regrets.
That being said there not the easiest club for inconsistent players, and only marginally easier to hit than a blade. The pw is a little large to my eye, but Mizzie is known for that, I actually had a mp-37 pw for awhile in the set.
I couldn't resist last summer, and bid on a set with r300 shafts, there sitting in my office for the right time. I may throw a combo set together with my 37. Ho Ho Ho

Right. Obviously know everything and am such a hater - when anyone that has played the MP60 line will tell you, if you aren't hitting the center of the clubface, they will punish you. They aren't any more forgiving than the 32's. I'm so biased against Mizuno - I hate them so much I have 3 sets in my basement.

Lefty fever! As a fellow lefty, we jump at deals like this. I bought a set of used MP-59 recently. They had been at a local shop for a while. Saw them, didn't buy. Went back a week later, gone! Go back a few weeks later; lookie here! Mp-59s are back! Gave me $100 off asking price and bent to my specs. Probably a little too much club for me right now, but I enjoy playing with them. Hey, I need something to go with my Jr. Staff bag!

I also have had MP-60s. Not the most forgiving club. Have fun with them. Hitting a few shots randomly and hitting shots under pressure on the course may turn out a little different. :taunt:

That's what is cool. When you get to my age,I don't feel pressured on any shot. If I shoot 100, it effects nothing else in my life. If I shoot an 80, the beer after the round tastes that much better. :)
