No, it is a person that gave his initial impressions after his first round using it.

Thanks. I think the touchscreen is going to be a love/hate thing. I'm not a big fan of the optical trackpad on the SGXw, but it does provide somewhat precise movement for setting the pin location. A touchscreen is likely going to be less precise.

I've never really used the scorecard or the auto-rotate feature on the SGX/SGXw. Beside being annoying, it eats up the battery. The SGXw is notorious for using up its battery, and if you're trying to get 2 rounds out of it, you pretty much have to turn off the bells and whistles.

I agree on the auto rotate. I went as far as turning it off. It was slow in displaying and it always happened just before you got done walking to a par 3 tee box to get the yardage. Also my club has PinPoint zones, so I have not have to move the pin position to get a better yardage. I accept the Touch is going to be a work in progress. There may be some pain now, but by next summer, I expect I will be glad I got it.

I'll be curious to see how long it takes to sync. Since the device comes preloaded with full details for every course, the need to sync should be limited to getting course updates. I certainly hope they figured out how to update a single course without having to reload everything. Syncing the SGX/SGXw is a royal pain, as it requires reloaded all 50 courses at each sync.

With the SGXw, I would only sync through wifi, especially if I was adding or deleting courses. My Touch is in a UPS truck for delivery today. I will find out more but I think the HD courses you will need to download and there is a limit of how many you can keep.

I could never get WiFi syncing to work properly. Some major league nitwit at SkyGolf decided to ignore the rules for SSID's, so my SSID containing certain non-alphanumeric characters wasn't recognized. On top of that, entering the d*mn key was a PITA with the built-in keyboard. You make one mistake, and you have to start from scratch.

I upgraded from the SGX thinking that the ability to sync via WiFi would be useful on vacation, but didn't realize that it only worked with WiFi that didn't require a browser-based password. I don't know about you, but it's extremely rare to find a truely open WiFi network. Almost every network requires entering a password or accepting a terms-of-service agreement on a browser page.

I sincerely hope that with all the waiting, and trials and tribulations of predecessor units you guys have gone through in anticipation of the arrival of this device, that it works as well as you hope.

I certainly admire your patience.

::fingers crossed::

I only used it on my home wifi. my mom's wifi, and at BayHill. Only had to enter my password for home and my mom's wifi the first time and it remembered it. BayHill has an open wifi. So I never had the issues you had.

Well I received my new Touch today. Won't sync and won't download my courses on to it. Spent an hour with Tech. Support, where he accessed my computer to fix problem, and he couldn't. Now is passing me on to someone else. Said I should get an e-mail with instructions within a day or so. My SGX is up for renewal tomorrow. But, my new Touch is good till April. So now I have nothing !!! This is the most frustrating company I have ever dealt with. Took my money in February, received on November 11, and it doesn't work. Also There were no golf balls included. And the hits just keep on coming !!!!

Sadly, that seems about par for the course for SkyGolf, or should I say double bogey.

However, aren't all courses preloaded? What has to be synced the first time? Membership information?

Courses that are preloaded are not in the vivid HD graphics. They are the same as in the SGX. You only get the new graphics with a membership, and downloading the courses. Also when I tried to sync with the app 360. It told me it was not available at this time, and would be coming soon. Also WIFI connection was not available.

So, after a roughly 1 year delay due to hardware supplier issues, they didn't manage to finish the software that provides one of the key features of the device, the ability to sync with a smartphone? They also didn't provide the WiFi function that was available on the previous model? That's frikin pathetic.

Their website states: "The TOUCH features a hi-resolution, sunlight-readable, color display that amplifies the clear superiority of SkyCaddie’s 35,000 preloaded, high-definition maps over its competition".

Lol. Are you saying that SkyGolf is lying again?

I've read elsewhere that the Touch can hold 100 HD maps, which would make more sense. I'm curious how much more detail an "HD" map can provide. I've never had an issue with the graphics on the SGX/SGXw. Also, how much detail does one need on a 3" screen? Does anyone know the resolution of the screen? SkyGolf doesn't mention anywhere that I can see. Also, it's curious that none of SkyGolf's webpages have pictures of the "HD" maps.

The Touch is preloaded with all of the maps we are used to on the SGX/SGXw. You can then download the Vivid HD maps. I have looked at some of the holes in demo mode and they are clearer, more detailed, and easier to read. The true test will be out on the course which hopefully I will be able to do Saturday.

Thanks. I was hoping to avoid having to sync on a regular basis. Having 100 HD courses is not bad I guess, but I'll still have to sync when heading out of town. 'Still, it'll be nice to have a standard map for each course if I happen to play a course that I haven't HD-synced.

I'll be interested to hear how the screen looks in bright sunlight.

If you own an iPhone or Android phone and going out of town, you can use Skycaddie Mobile, their smartphone Golf GPS app. It has one feature I really like. As you zoom in, a dot will appear with the yardage for each point that is in what we know as Listview.

In a couple weeks, Bluetooth sync will be available. When the Lynx came out, they also had to wait a short time for Bluetooth sync.

What it looks like they might be doing is holding back on some of the things that not all users use for release shortly (Bluetooth, PinPoint, Intelligreen Pro). First get any bugs fixed on the features everyone uses. I have been in programming for over 30 years and when I release things, it always amazes me how users find ways to do things that were never thought of that and are causing errors in the programs. No matter how much beta you do, someone will find a way to break a program.

I've been a software engineer for 27 years, so I know how the release cycle works. However, in the case of the Touch, they were delayed for 6+ months due to hardware supplier issues. Frankly, I find it astonishing that they didn't finish the BT sync in that time. Also, this is their top of the line model. How can they not have PinPoint and IntelliGreen Pro on day 1? These are not new features, but have been available in at least 3 previous models for 4+ years. Really, it's shocking.

I do not think they are using Windows RT but some other OS. Although the features have been around for a while, I believe the software in the Touch is 100% all new code, not a modification of established code.

Ugh. That doesn't bode well for us. After 10+ years of getting the bugs worked out in the Windows RT-based software, they're starting over? Oy.

Look at this way. For those of you that have to put your clubs away for the winter, by spring, those of us that can play year round will have most all of the bugs found and the additional features tested and back in. I do think the Touch is a good platform for Skycaddie to grow from. Over the next few years, they will be able to add new features to the Touch that the SGX / SGXw are not capable of handling.

I'm glad you're sticking your neck out for us. :taunt:

After being a beta tester for SG on the last 4 models, I'm sitting this round out. I'll probably pick up a Touch next summer once they've worked out the inevitable bugs.

I agree that the old hardware/software platform basically reached the end of its serviceable life. I would like to think that the company has learned a few lessons along the way, and will avoid making the same mistakes in the future. However, I wouldn't hold my breath. I have been on my share of large software rewrite projects, and sadly, the same mistakes are often made by a new generation of unseasoned developers.

So the update that will include Bluetooth connectivity, pinpoint, and Intelligreen will be out in the next week or so, says the customer service guy I spoke to today. I decided to entertain myself and talk more to this guy via live chat. After talking to him I came away either thinking that I know nothing about what I thought the Touch would be or he knows nothing about what the Touch is.

It was my understanding that the pre-loaded courses would only give you front, middle, and back yardages for greens or simple basic information and that you would have to keep a "course list" that could hold up to 100 courses that could be displayed in the new HD graphics. The "course list" would be just like the courses you had to load on all the prior models, but this time those were the ones you were choosing to have the most details on and HD graphics.

However, this guy tells me that every single course will be there in HD and I do not have to keep a "course list". Instead I just get close to the course and let the Touch find it and begin my round and I'll have all the information, including HD graphics, at my finger tips.

I then asked, "well why would I ever have to really sync the device then because I only really ever did that to change my course list?"

He replies that syncing the device will only be needed when courses are updated or there are software updates for the unit.

I wish I would have thought to have just snapped a screenshot of the conversation, but needless to say I left the conversation more confused than when I entered it.

Can anyone make any sense of what I have said and kind of clear up what to expect in regards to the Touch?
