yeah I always used a silicone skin on my uPro... I guess SC believes the Touch doesn't need a case, or would be a pain to use in a case since it's touch based, who knows...

BTW, my Touch broke this week, the usb receptacle got pushed back up into the case, so of course no way to charge it now. 8 days out of warranty too. But, I called SG and they said no problem, they are sending me a replacement even though the warranty is expired. I had to pay a $7 fee, which is basically for the return shipping of the broken unit. New one should be here in a few days. So Thumbs Up to SG CS from me :). :good:

7 Bucks is well worth getting the replacement.
Replacement arrived today, it's a refurb, which I kinda expected tbh, but still a bit disapointed - was hoping for a fresh/new unit. Oh well at least they replaced it, so I shouldn't complailn.
I've had several refurbished units throughout the years across several models, and they all worked fine. If anything, I think they get a little more TLC compared to a new unit. At least you know they went through some type of individual QA before being repackaged for delivery. With new units, they likely test only 1 random unit per batch.

Good point, back in my early days of IT, I always liked getting refurb drives b/c you know went through more rigorous testing than new, as you noted. They might look a little iffy, but they always worked fine :).

Well, after reading all these posts I decided to order the new Touch this morning. They're giving me $75 for my old SG5. The Touch shipped within 5 hours.

I've had the SG2, SG4, and SG5. The SG4 was skittish at best but the SG2 & SG5 worked flawlessly. The only problems were occasional issues with the ever changing SG sync software.

I'm getting the impression from the various posts herein that the Touch was brought out prematurely but that the last two updates may have resolved some of the more egregious issues. Anytime a couple of folks are constantly defend attacks on a piece of technology like the Touch, it becomes very evident that the subject device has shortcomings.

As I was trained many years ago, whenever you develop a training program, a manual, or a software controlled device, you first hand to someone with zero product familiarity, give them an appropriately brief amount of time to figure it out and then have them come in and explain and demonstrate proper understanding of the lesson and or the device. If they can't do it, "It ain't ready for Prime Time."

I'll report back next week as to whether the new fully updated Touch works at an acceptable level without freezing up and I'll double check its data yardage displays against my new Bushnell Tour X Rangefinder. With my SG5 the Bushnell rangefinders almost always confirmed the displayed yardages.

When you get it, make sure that you update the Touch to the latest release. If you get a freeze, report the course and hole it happens on to Skygolf. Also try it in demo mode before you take it out on the course. Most reported freezes seem to be issues that just require a fix the the course data file. Like a lot of products, there are always a small number of people that will put up a fuss and make an issue seem like the sky is falling. They forget for most people, the product works.

First, I've been buying and utilizing high tech devices and operating military aircraft and large commercial aircraft for a great many years. I'm sure there are many, many folks on here at least equally experienced with similar technology and equipment, and many of us have such experience dating back to before the days of DOS, let alone Windows. Please quit asserting that anyone who complains about the Touch simply is an unsophisticated lazy user and that the problems are with their intellect and self discipline rather than with the SG product.

And, no, I won't be immediately updating the Touch. SkyGolf is offering free "concierge service." If this little toy arrives needing me to update it in any way then there is something fundamentally wrong with SG and the way they do business.

And, no again, I will not be contacting SG if the unit freezes up on certain holes of certain courses. And, also no again, I will not be loading each course I play into DEMO Mode to see whether the team at SG has done their job. They put the data in the SG data system, then load it into their own quality assurance Touch units, and then they test the course data before unleashing the resulting product on the consumers. If they are too lazy or too cheap to test their own products I'm certainly not going to be sucked into doing it for them.

Quite simply, after all this time the Touch either works or it doesn't work. The SG team has either done their jobs correctly or they haven't. If they haven't I will be returning the unit very quickly.

Frankly, the only thing I find more bothersome than companies that put out fundamentally flawed products are the sycophants who constantly and rabidly defend such corporate incompetence and blame it on the end user. The end user has a right to expect that the SG promotional materials are truthful and accurate.

Then when you do get a Touch (or any tech device) and if it freezes or has an issue without attempting to get it fixed or corrected, don't post on any boards what a piece of crap it is. No tech device will work perfectly for every person and things do not get fixed or corrected until they are reported. Also you would be doing everyone a disservice by complaining about a failure without attempting to get fixed.

You work as a low level tech for SG? Your nose is showing its true colors. "brown"

If the product sucks, I’m going to voice it. Why do I have to spend time calling them to report problem after problems? It’s the same issues they have been having all along. It’s been approximately 8 months since the product was released? I don’t have an hour to kill on hold each time the unit freezes.

If you like the product, more power to you. As for me, I can’t and will not support such poor business practice. If they put out crap, I’m going to review it as crap.

Why do I get the feeling your face is bright red and your veins on your forehead is about to burst reading my signature? LOL Settle down, there is more to life than SG.

Since they were offering “concierge service” for free, that was the selling point for me. However, very misleading. I assumed it would include quality control and testing before the unit is shipped out. But in the end, it came down to many hours wasted on trying to get the unit to work properly and frustrating hours on hold with their CS. In all fairness, maybe I receive one of their units from a bad batch. Whatever the case, I was frustrated and many hours lost in trying to correct the unit faults without success.

I wish you the best and hope you do receive a working unit.

First. My name is not Ponderosa. Stop using it, it is offensive how you are using and what you think it implies about me.

Second. Just because someone supports a product, expresses, and calls out someone that will bash a product that is using an old release and will not call support, does not make them employee. In fact an employee could not write what I do as a representative of the company.

If you continue to reply as you do to my responses, I will start reporting you. Btw, your responses show the character of you, not me.

Received my new SkyCaddie TOUCH today. I turned it on and all of my courses were pre-loaded by the Concierge service as promised. The TOUCH software was up to date on arrival with version 1.0.0.9

I was able to download and add three new courses without any problem using Bluetooth and the SkyGolf 360 App on my iPhone 6.

The TOUCH unit is quite compact in size but the screen is bright and large enough to have great utility. The screen has good color quality and makes using the unit in bright sunlight very easy.

The courses load without any undue delay and the holes and greens are well displayed along with yardage guidance. The pin locations are easy to relocate with light fingertip pressure. No need for a tee or any other tap device in order to move the pins/flags around.

So far I've only played a couple of demo rounds but have seen zero problems.

Maybe this latest update has resolved most or all of the reported previous problems.

Overall I would judge this a huge upgrade from my old SG5. Hopefully everything will also go smoothly on an actual course. Maybe tomorrow...

No. It is not connected to your smartphone during the round. It will only connect to the smartphone using bluetooth during the sync process.

How did they come up with $39.95 as the value of the concierge service? How long does it take to do that yourself?

I'm thinking about buying from Amazon for $250 rather than upgrading through SG for $224.95. That way I can keep my SG5.
I would not pay extra for it, as you could easily do it yourself. If they throw it in as part of the package price, look at it as a no charge extra.

In the offer I got it's included in the $224.95, but that's only a $25 savings vs. buying from Amazon and doing it myself. For $25 I'd rather keep the SG5 and be able to give it to someone.

I have had my Skycaddie Touch for three weeks now. I got it at a nice trade-in price though Skycaddie; it showed up on time, listed my preferred courses, up-to-date operating system and ready for use. Every aspect translates to a huge improvement over SG5. I like the improved information and how each is presented, its size and ease of use, including score card functions. This is THE best unit of all...

'Sounds good. I'd probably bite the bullet and upgrade from my SGXw if the Touch had a silicone skin/case available. My device leads a rough life, and I'm not willing to forgo the added protection of the skin.

I really have no idea what SG is thinking. A silicone case has been available for every model since the SG1.

Touch comes with a screen guard cover and has a flexible flip cover that when closed covers plugin holes. Not much else to worry about, least in my eyes. I can't say my GPS unit leads a tough life though. It's kept in my bag most of the time, on the cart mounting bracket when riding or hangs off my bag or on my push cart when walking.

As far as a protective case is concerned, give them time.. If they determine there's a profitable market, it will be made... just like the temp cart mount bracket introduction and the belt clip. Also, Skycaddie did a smart thing by creating a charging cable that plugs into USB in my laptop or car to charge, or into a wall plug adapter to use AC. So, now its seldom brought in the house.

Yeah, I'll give them time. My SGXw has led a rough life. I wear it on a belt clip, and I can't count the number of times it has snagged on the handrail getting out of an electric cart, and plunged to the cart path below. The extra layer of rubber provides a lot of protection.

Lol. Now that's what I call customer service! Good timing, as I received another ($200 off) upgrade offer from them that expires 7/27.

Looking at the silicone case, I'm struck by the fact that it doesn't have the plastic button on the back to attach to the belt clip, unlike the SGX/SGXw models that have an integrated button. Does this imply that the button on the Touch is permanently attached to the device? I'd hate to think so, as the buttons do wear out over time. The button on the SGX/SGXw is attached to a separate plastic cradle.

Edit: Nevermind. I found a good photo of the back, and the button is attached to a plate that is screwed into the back of the device, allowing one to remove the button if desired.

Yes, its attached using 2 screws, which makes it removable. Though I don't use the belt clip, I see no need to remove it, as it doesn't stick out enough to be annoying.

I just bit the bullet and ordered one using the SGX upgrade offer. My SGXw is getting long in the tooth. Given that the majority of major features have been added to the Touch, and the availability of the silicone case, it's time to switch.

I believe the Touch will come with my selected courses preloaded, correct? Given that the Touch already has basic maps for all courses, I assume it'll contain the HD maps?
