Ken Griffey Jr. Custom Clubs

Those are cool looking. I don't know if anyone remembers these. They did these for Penny Hardaway a few years ago.

Those are horrible looking....

If there was no penny there they would be gorgeous and I'd buy them in a heartbeat.

Cool clubs!! (Griffey's not Penny's) His golf swing is great too, BUT not as smooth and fluid as his baseball swing though. That was perfection.

Purest baseball player of all time.

In an era of steroids and cheaters, he was the best (and cleanest) amongst them.

Looks like he knows how to drive a golf ball.

351 yards, that's quite long. It's GolfWRX standard!
If he could have stayed healthy, I thought he would have been the one to take out Aaron's record. His whole time in Cincinnatti was a mess. Him and Will Clark had some of the sweetest swings ever.
Agree on all counts. Crazy thing is I was an assistant coach for the Division II College Baseball National Championship Team this year and none of the guys knew who Will Clark was. Will Clark???? The Natural???? Cmon!!!!!!

Penny's clubs weren't done by Nike, and I doubt KGJ's were either, I mean it's just a laser engraving. Pretty sure BOS had pics off his clubs years ago that they did.
You doubt that Ken Griffey, Jr., a famous multi-millionaire athlete who has a signature line with Nike, had his custom clubs built and personalized by Nike?

Played rounds with many A's players including Dave "Smoke" Stewart and Vida Blue. Vida was a member at my old course and was a 2-3 handicap. He's much older now but still had a very balanced and smooth swing. Joe Morgan is a regular at Lake Chabot and have played with his group many times. He is a really good player, and he would call me his ringer and take all team bets which I always went home with some good money. Stewart by far hit the ball the furthest as he is at least 6'4 and a very athletic build. Most x baseball players have very balanced and good tempo swings which is why they transition as good players very easily.

He doubts Nike did the obvious "aftermarket" finish job on them. I'd bet they sent that out to BOS or someone else.

I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Griffey (my childhood idol!) when I worked at golf galaxy. It was the year before he retired, and he was back with the M's. They were playing a weekend set in Cleveland and he came in with a couple of fellows and bought a Nike staff bag and about 6 dozen Pro V1X. I was polite and helped him out with everything and he even asked me where my favorite course was. The thing I remember most is that his credit card was unbelievably heavy. That is all.

Aren't all Nike shoes? Some kid in Bangladesh pimped those up I'm guessing :)

My point was it's far more cost effective to let a refinisher do the refinishing on something like those Penny clubs. Obviously I have no idea if that's what took place but it's certainly plausible.

I didn't know Nike went to this extreme on the details of custom clubs for non-golfers. Looks sweet!!

Nice. I wonder if, for no apparent reason, you can't play them for 3 or 4 months and then have to wait until next year to use them?

oh man. as a seattle-ite who grew up during Griffey's prime, this stings a little, but it is pretty hilarious! barring injury I think he goes down as the best ever....

 • 5 weeks later...

Living in Minnesota I was of course a Twins fan. My favorite player all time because of that is Gary Gaetti. I know it's strange that as a Twins fan I don't say Puckett, but for some reason I was never a huge fan of his and with what came out later about him put a real stain on the legacy he had with the Twins. However my 3 favorite players after Gaetti were Thomas, Griffey, Ripken. Griffey however was the most impressive of them all. He could hit, field, run like no other player I've ever seen.

Thomas was great from an offensive perspective but was never spectacular with the glove the same way Griffey and Ripken were at their positions.

Unfortunately at that time cable wasn't in every house hold, and because Clark, and Gwynn were in the NL I never got to follow them the way I could those 3. The only real baseball you could get was TWIB which I watched religiously but it's no where near what MLB Network and the internet can provide now. I would have loved to have gone and seen them play in their primes.

Now the only player that gives me that same little kid feeling I once had about baseball is Pedroia.

It was an AMEX black card.

To answer the question people asked , no his golf swing doesn't compare to his baseball swing. As with most players WHEN he can manage to hit it straight it goes a long way. He has a pretty good sense of humor and it was always fun giving him crap about his swing. I'm surprised that people are surprised that they would make a set like that for him. People underestimate how much money these guys have and just how much they are catered to.

Although I knew several players Sabathia was probably the most low key and nicest one I ever spent time with. Again he's a big boy and when he connected with one it went a long way. I laughed when he pulled an oblique at the beginning of one season and joked about too much golf because he played just about every day.

wonder if Griffey's golf swing is as sweet as his baseball swing?
I don't think it is possible.
its close. Ive seen him hit balls in florida. STUPID long
Interesting thing is that KGj wasn't always long. I played with him in a casual at Doral-Blue in the 90's, just he and a close friend of his and myself. He was hitting the ball no farther than I was. I made a point of it and he said "Hey i'm just a little guy, I am not a power guy". Well I just about spit up at that point. So I correctly pointed out that I was the "little guy" at 5'7" 140 lbs. I told him I thought he looked a "little bigger". Thus I went about to correct an obvious flaw that he had. Up to this point we had not talked about anything baseball, not a word. But in trying to get my point across, I wasn't succeeding in golf terms. So finally I said "Let my try another description. What you are doing is hitting it off to the opposite field, try pulling it down the line!". BOOM, he understood that and went from hitting little fades to bullets immediately. His drives jumped 40-50 yds (really!!) and he was two clubs longer than me with his irons after hitting them the same earlier. The last three holes he was remarkable. Over the next few years he will sometime fall back into the bad habits (like we all do). The last I knew he has become a pretty good stick. Side note: he can hit pretty darn good right handed, he could have switched but his left-handed swing is his trademark (as evidenced by the pictures on the thread). I met his wife and family after the round. Really good people!
I could tell more, but you will have to read it in my book in 2015. :busted_cop:
