The effects of posture on ability to get a deep right hip

Dave D

Recommended Posts

Monte's deep hip turn video (

) says that your hip needs to move up and away from the ball.

A simple diagram here but am I right in thinking that this is true?

I believe this is one of the reasons that I struggle with getting a deep right hip when hitting balls. my posture tends to be more upper body bent down than rear end out and some tilt in the pelvis.

thoughts?

Last week I was struggling a bit with my game, hitting some shots weak right. I did some searching on the internet and ran across an article specifically about posture. When I warmed up and played on Saturday, I specifically focused on just a slight straightening of back at address. When you do this, you can feel the core engage, and your balance on center of your feet becomes much more stable. I hit the ball MUCH more crisply and was top dog in our weekly dogfight. Seems like posture is one of those many things that is very easy to get away from.

I agree, I never really think of posture I only really check alignment, I guess my own arrogance really thinking that posture wont affect things much, but I think it does, especially in this case.

And would setting up with the pelvis and shoulders on the same incline mean that if you turned the shoulders 90 degrees to the spine then the hips would have to follow suit?

What about the opposite problem. (Lower cross). What effect does this have on hip turn?

(Pardon the copyright )
I would imagine this would create too steeper hip turn and limit the amount of turn.

and im guessing a very sore back!

I have the same issue. I find when I'm too much on my toes I can't get deep. If I have a flat back and am sitting back more it happens almost automatically. Note to self is to stop having lazy setups.

Posture is immensely important. I like to feel like my butt is my body's COG.

Yes as long as you aren't restricting your hips.

You'd be right! Ouch! Why would you want to add curve to your spine?

Too much bend at the knees can restrict hip turn. Dave's second diagram and Aaron Page's diagram would as well.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

I could be wrong, but I thought it wasn't so much of a choice to address the ball this way, as it was your overall muscle imbalances causing improper posture.

Maybe but if you can't tuck your butt in then I'd recommend some time at the gym before ruining your back.

for reference the knee bend wasn't to scale or intended was just there to complete the stickman. do u agree with what I said about the pelvis & posture Monte?

I totally agree with Long&STR8.

This isn't my problem, just wanted to fill the posture spectrum.

Is it safe on body parts to force positions like that? Assuming you can fully move your spine.

Id also say not enough knee bend can restrict your hip turn. you cant turn your hips if your legs are straight

Yea I'm quite sure lack of gym reps isn't one of your issues Aaron ;).

If you had weak abs and your lower back arched like that, the danger would be to the back, not the weak muscles. You could force the correct posture, but staying there throughout the swing would be nearly impossible. Weak areas usually show up as pain elsewhere.

Thanks JP,

Which swing flaws would become more prominent as the ideal posture sways towards either extreme?

A good neutral setup is 20* forward bend with the pelvis and 40* forward bend with the thorax. Unfortunately, neither dictates what the other does.

If you swing with an anterior pelvic tilt i.e. (lower cross) your lower back is going to scream at you after 18! Restricts hip turn (lazy hips) & loads the lumbar spine! Not Good

I know the rear leg shouldn't straighten, per se, but when I focus on getting a deeper hip urn in BS-- it gets pretty close. As long as I maintain some flex, this is fine? Or an over-correction?
You should lose flex in the trail knee, you just don't want it to lock.
