A: If it's a brand new golfer who doesn't know this fundamental, then I would agree they at least need to be told about it. However, as a teaching concept, I think there are much more effective concepts than telling someone to just have their hands ahead of the club. So, no, if the instructor is trying to help the student improve as best they can, I don't think teaching lag is the best way to do that.

Perhaps your definition of decent is different to mine. Clubhead throwaway (casting) will result in a loss of clubhead speed before impact. Please explain to me how it won't if you don't agree.[/b]

A: I said I disagreed that it is "pretty hard" to get "decent" clubhead speed with no lag. This doesn't mean I think its "easy". I would say its more of a moderate difficulty. Decent is 100 mph driver speed. I got 110 easily with my former swing as the flippiest pivot staller ever with almost no lag and I'm not even very talented at all so that's what I am basing it off. Also, you didn't say "max" speed. If you meant, "you need lag for max speed" then I agree, but you clearly didn't say that. You referenced "decent" speed, which is different than optimum. If this isn't what you meant, then clarify.

A: I would disagree with Homer's statement, but that's just my opinion.

A: When did I ever say anything about instructors not looking at where the clubhead passes during a lesson? No, I don't think that, and I take offense to your assertion that I'd be dumb enough to think such a thing. That being said, the more I read what you say, the more I think it is more of a semantics dispute, as you mentioned in OP. I agree that lag generally needs to be there, but don't believe in directly telling someone to get more of it. I just don't think any teaching method that primarily references the need to get or maintain lag as a teaching idea is the best way. There are other causes that you could address that would get you lag without even having to think about it. That's really my point. A good swing will have some lag, and a bad one generally won't get better by just focusing on getting lag into it.
