Garmin g6 vs everything else

BG5

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas,

I am considering getting a garmin g6 as its the closest thing to the callaway upro (which I liked). I like the idea of no fees and I like how the garmin is per loaded so you don't have to do anything. Any other units you suggest around the $250 range. Garmin is 300 but has 50 mail in rebate now. Any feedback on the garmin or other suggestions would be great.

I have never really considered a range finder as they appear to take to much effort and time so I want something I can take a quick peak and then move on.

Happy Holidays!

I think you are on the right track, the G6 is really the only thing out there close to the upro from what I can see, and is also on my list of replacement options. But, I'm not going to worry about it until at least end of 2014 and who knows what will come out between now and then :).

I've been looking at both the G6 and the S3. The people I know that use the S3 love it and love the simplicity of it but to me having no hazard information off the tee is kind of a dealbreaker. The only reason I hesitate to pull the trigger right now is knowing that around/after the PGA show is when companies might have new products coming out.

FWIW I think Garmin really dropped the ball on the S4 deciding to not go with hazard information and instead including bluetooth so you can read your texts/emails. Stupid.

I had narrowed the Garmin G6 to be my next GPS, but then I decided to go with a watch instead--- I love the watch for its simplicity and speed, but I'm sure I would have enjoyed the G6 as well.

While likes/dislikes of GPS's are somewhat personal preference, I don't think anyone can complain about the Garmin mapping accuracy, frequency of updates and customer service.

To help you decide between the others on the market, I would recommend you check out the website "Critical Golf" -- they have done some nice reviews on most of the major GPS's. While I'd take their overall ranking with a grain of salt, it's a great place to compare the features of each.

I'd also highly recommend reading the customer reviews on Amazon, Golfsmith and TGW. You'll see the G6 ranks very highly. That's how I ultimately decided the G6 was going to be my choice for a full-featured GPS. But in the end I went with the watch-- purely because I wanted simplicity.

As DCMidnight indicated, I also think Garmin missed the mark with the S4 watch. Instead of providing hazard info, they crapped it up with features like Bluetooth, texting and email.

The watch GPS is intriguing, esp since I use laser mostly and refer to GPS occasionally - a quick glance at F/M/B for simplicity. But, I detest wearing a watch when playing golf, so have ruled it out. I saw a guy at a course recently with the talking gps, the little clip on deal you put on your belt or hat. You press the button and it speaks the yardages for the green. Keen idea, quick, simple, but might get annoying after awhile, esp to playing partners.

I've got the G6 and love it. Its fast and easy to use and so far has been very accurate. There have been a one or two spots on the local courses I play that have been off but its no biggie. I use to wear the belt clip but got tired of it moving around in the swing or having to pull my shirt up to see it. I purchased the carabiner clip for it and attach it to my bag now and its perfect. A full charge will last you 3 or 4 rounds depending on the brightness you have it on.

I chose it over the s3 cause i just don't like wearing a watch when I golf. Its also easy to pin point your layup area on the g6 which I could not do on the watch.

I was between the g6 and the s3 when I picked up my GPS. I loved the simplicity of the watch, and the idea of quick access. But, I'm not really a watch person. I'm sure I could have gotten used to it but opted for the g6 instead. Incredibly happy with my decision. Wore it on my belt for a while and had no issue, now I have it on the handle of my push cart. Very easy to access, very simple, and very accurate.

The watch is nice if you know the course very well, but knowing carry yardages is very helpful, and the G6 can provide that. I Highly recommend the g6.

I do generally like the G6. The yardages have been pretty much spot on for me. I also carry a laser and can get within a yard or two of each other if I can see the flag (you can move the flag on the green with the G6 to get a more exact yardage).

The problem I've had with the G6, in the 2 summers I've had it, is that it failed to tell me of water hazards on 2 courses that I had never played before. They are hazards you can't see from the tee due to either a dog leg or the contour of the fairway and in both cases the hazards were rather large, a yard or two off the fairway.

I got to depend on this device so much that I didn't bother looking at scorecards, yardage books or hole signs but I now change that practice on courses I've never played before.

Another thumbs up for the G6. I converted from the SkyCaddie SG2.5 and haven't looked back. Played MANY rounds with my SkyCaddie with others with various brands of GPS devices and there was never more than a 2-3 yard difference, max. I get 3 to 4 18 hole rounds between charges and it's very user friendly.

I also have a Busnell V3 that I won and i use the G6 90% of the time. I do like the laser for practice and for shorter par 3's.

You won't go wrong with the Garmin.

Whats the big difference between the G6 and the SGXw? It appears to be touchscreen and then the subscription, is that it? All the reading I've done here and on other sites it looks like both do score, stats, and club tracking on the device.

My wife and my mom didn't communicate about birthday gifts so I have both units now and trying to figure out what I should do. Which of these units should I keep or should I wait for one of the new ones? I'll admit I'm partial to the walking the course that SkyCaddie does so the subscription isn't an issue

I ordered and received the sky caddy linx and was disappointed. it's at least one half inch thick...a batman watch. I also have the upro and just looked at the garmin g6 and that's my choice.
