The original TPM1, with the soft no-step shaft, was my favorite.

I loaned mine to Tour pro Keith Ferguson and he won Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament with it.

Of course, I never got the putter back.

I have 2 but the other does not have the original pencil shaft. Still puts a nice soft roll on the ball....

Just once, I'd like to roll a few putts with a"real" TPMills #1,l made by the postman himself. For about 20 years, I putted with a Spalding TPM 1,the original, with the ferrule, pencil shaft, and paddle grip(Until it was outlawed) This putter gave real good feel, rolled the ball very well(it seemed to have overspin, hugged the ground, and dove in the front edge of the hole).
I moved to a club with really keen greens, and the TPM1 seemed too light,so,in 2007, I invested in a carbon steel custom One putter from David Mills,at 343 grams. This putter, too, has really good feel and rolls the bal well.
Occasionally,I'll long for"the good old days",and pull the TPM out,but it's like re-uniting with an old flame...oh,yeah,now I remember why I left!

The TPM 1 was his most popular model for years. i first met him in the early 70's. I was trying to do Milled putters with my Bridgeport and had used a TPM at some point as I had a guy at my club that went to tour events for Titleist and sometimes brought home neat stuff and he helped me when i would go to an event by introducing me to tour players. A whole different World back then. I had Truett make me a couple putters but here is one of my favorites. It was great knowing him and talking with him. Tad

Dan like you the No9 I have one that I have had for 20 years or so. I did have it out 3 weeks ago on some super fast greens but it is a backup

I have a Spalding TPM-6 which I saved from the local rubbish recycling facility for the princely sum of £2.

It's beautifully balanced, lovely soft feel and rolls a good putt. I should have it in the bag more often!
A "step up" may be streaching it a bit. The Mizzy may have a better feel to you because of different process and grade of steel and also the Mizzy has a 370 shaft where the old Spaldings like mine have a 223 shaft and machining processes have changed over the years too.

Thats a cool story. Keith Fergus (on) was very smart to borrow that flat stick from you. I wonder if he still has it today.

That "pencil shaft" as it was called IMO was responsible for the unique and great feel of the TPMs.

I have a Spalding HBA from the late 70s that has a pencil shaft. A beautiful putter!

Spalding used that shaft in zillions of putters, but as far as I know no one makes it today. So if one has one to reshaft it means cannibalizing a shaft from another Spalding putter.

Not saying it's the case with Dan, but I'm sure some would say that the fact the putter has Mizuno stamped on it instead of Spalding is an upgrade. I disagree.

I'll ask him the next time I see him, but I'd guess he has it in a club rack or barrel some where.

I don't know much about this putter, other than I've always enjoyed using it.

My #3 is a great looking putter. Just a bit too light to be useful for my stroke. But after a thorough scrubbing with steel wool and several applications of gun blue, the thing looks amazing. It was fairly beat up, so the depth of the stamping is too shallow to make the paint fill look any good at all.

they are pretty much the same head desighn. the muzino is heaver and much better finished. funny i putt better with the spalding. no doubt the spaldings are way undervalued today. i bought my no 1 just for its shaft for another putter restoration project but dont have the heart to take it apart so it stays as is

I have one that is so rusty I can't tell if it's a 1 or 7. Want to do something with it but not sure where to begin. But I knew what it was thanks to this article on clubsofdistinction :

http://www.clubsofdi...om/tpm/tpm.html

Ebeer, your putter looks similar to the Gold models but maybe it's a special order?

not very. they are old school for the most part but i find the no9 to be the most forgiving. it plays more like a modern putter than most of the rest.. the later tour series are more close to modern putters. series 1 and touring pro models are old school. i bet some of you dont know #8 isnt a putter but a chipper!. i have 2 but it has so little loft -you really have to be carefull with it.its like chipping with a 2 iron

How forgiving are these TPMs?
Like Dan says other than the #9 they will tell on you with a bad stroke. The #9 forgives like an Anser and is similar. The difference of feel to me is the "pencil" shaft. with modern grips I think feel is more enhanced.

i putted so well with the no9-i will have a hard time not keeping it in the bag-lol.i did add some lead tape to the bottom . i game the no8 when i am playing slow greens-very slow greens the lack of loft is scarry for a chipper. adding a superstroke slim no1 to my no19 as a test. yes this is blastphmey. this putter has always preformed the worst for me and if it improves-it m$T2eC16VHJIgFHRhz6PpBBSenDiypzw~~60_35.JPGight prove the superstroke has the goods

Naah it aint blastphemy to put a Super Stroke on an old Mills I had to put an Winn AVS on mine because the original was rotted beyond repair. In fact the AVS added sensitivity to it. Heck just the kind of off the wall thing I would do
