I have another.

Notah Begay's pillow talk voice when he gets all soft and high pitched when a player is about to hit a shot.

"Well Johnny, he has about 175 to the pin, probably a seven iron, he's going to want to bring this in on a slight right to left trajectory to compensate for the breeze from the left and then I'm going to lay you down real soft and kiss your neck and put my hands on your -"

Really Notah, really?

"Hello Friends" - Means it's time to turn the stereo on.
Which is your favorite album to play , "Love it to Death", "School's Out", "Killer", or "Billion Dollar Babies"?
Bravo gwlee7. Nice to know someone else is an Alice fan. I guess if Nantz is involved "Welcome to my Nightmare" would be the logical choice.

"He should make this" (Talking about a 6 to 7 foot putt) Easy for you to say up there in the booth.
"Not much to this putt" Get your A down here and putt it then with the tournament on the line.

Hate these two lines.

3 Wood...... I haven't seen one in years, except for photos in the classic club section.
They're made of metal these days, so.....
And irons aren't made of iron. Sure, steel might have some it in, but titanium, boron.....

Notah Begay . . . . enuff ahreddy with the "EVER SO SLIGHTLY".
+1 on the "ever so slightly" for Notah. Also his overly soft/whispery i'm gonna sex you up/Barry White voice he usescan be annoying. I forgot another i've heard many times by many different announcers about Tiger over the years..."Tiger Really hates bogeying" WTF is that? Are there other PGA Tour players that love bogeying or something?

Reminds me of baseball announcers saying "he wanted that pitch" when it's close and the ump doesn't call it a strike. No duh he wanted that pitch.

And to your point, there has also been the variation that "nobody hates a bogey more than Woods." I'm thinking someone somewhere is approaching a state of rage if "hating a bogey" is something that can be measured in such a manner.

Edited to add: "the Great Man." That's an awfully big assumption, no? Just because someone is/was a great golfer doesn't mean they are a great man. Ian Baker-Finch is bad for that one.

If the Koch/Miller tandem doesn't stop with "ever so slightly" and their constant back patting and agreeing with one another, I may never turn on the sound to an NBC broadcast again. Uggh. Just shut up and talk less would be a great start. I don't need intricate details about a 3 foot tap in. There is a limit.

And do away with a putt that doesn't go in being referred to as a "good putt that didn't go in." It then becomes a "missed putt."

Pretty much any tandem of announcers should not be used week in, week out. Espscially the Kock/Miller dynamic. Too much of a pseudo "golf institution" with a lot of these announcers. A little variety would be nice, along with a LOT fewer ads in between ads. Ads used to be for commercial breaks. PGA Tour is the WORST with constant plugs and sponsor knob polishing.

"This putt breaks left to right"

The 1973 US Open champ started using this about 30 years ago and it has bugged me ever since.

Does it break left and then right or does it just break to the right?

This has been around so long it seems to be normal now but still bugs me.

It seems most of the terms that we dislike were started by the same guy.

Fades and draws are actual shots. The adjectives attached to them can get tiresome.

Has it occurred to anyone that if the announcers follow our suggestions that the broadcasts will be quite silent? :-)
Probably about 30 years ago the Jets and Dolphins played a late season game with field/crowd sounds only. The "announcer" that day was Bryant Gumbel and frankly I thought it was his best performance.

I remember watching that. Quite a bold experiment for the tv network. It was a late season game as we were in Florida in December that year.

Instead of saying "not his best effort," wouldn't it be nice if they said, "ouch, that must have hurt his confidence," once in awhile.

A player holes out from the fairway: why not say, "that was unconscious."

A player hits it 2 feet out of a sand trap: why not say, "I bet he practices that."

Actually, you guys are right. They could say a lot less about the action, and spice it up with stories about the guys off the course, or their families, or their grandmothers, or their exotic cars. Anything but being redundant about the action.

Hell, talk about the windsurfers in the ocean when they are at Kapalua. Or Lucas Glover messing up his knee on the paddle board.

when they are on the main island, talk about the surfers - do a little homework.

At Torrey Pines, do a story about the hang gliders. As a matter of fact, maybe Johnny should go hang gliding, and live to talk about it.

they could talk about clubs, the balls, anything other than the action - until the top guys are playing the last few holes.

I'll probably get a kicking for this but I really hate commentators referring to the number of the hole in the singular i.e. "over to seven" etc. NO ! Its the seventh.

"Carol Vorderman..... I was watching her the other day .....and I got aroused...............7 letters ... not bad for someone who left school at 15"

This topic has come up recently and that time as well as this time, there seems to be a general consensus.

It's the failure of these talking heads to recognize that wood has come to denote to type of club, not the material.

Don't have to say fairway metal or 3 metal. A 3 metal could just as well describe a 3 iron. they're both metal.
