i remember 20 years ago if you were not a georgia resident you could not get a tee time at nob north. use to have a buddy who lived in georgia call. i have scary memories at nob north. i do have to agree with lebanontngolfer, canyon ridge is fun. nice to play in the dead of summer cause it is a bit cooler up there. sweetens cove was fun but i am sorry it is overpriced.

Just curious why you think it's overpriced? I guess I should ask what you paid? But I feel like it's nicer than any public course you can play in the area. Only being 9 holes is a little quirky, but playing it twice, and from different tees is very enjoyable. The greens and bunkering are unlike anything you can play in the area and I would say it's nicer than a lot of private courses in the area charging 70+ to play.

It is not really a knock against the course even though it sounds like it. The course was in decent shape. My gripes were half of one of the greens the grass was rough, as in you could not putt on it, you had to chip. Quite a few bunkers had that plastic stuff that is under sod overhanging in the bunker by a couple of feet. I played at the discounted resident rate of like 52 or 58 bucks to ride 18, can't remember. No clubhouse, no driving range, no bathrooms. Now it sounds like I am just killing this place but I am not. I had fun, will I go back? Yes but I am not dying to. It is a very different course for this area and it is fun. I hope the place makes it and continues to improve.

Bump, heading down to the Masters next week from Indianapolis with a pit stop in Nashville. All of the posts in this thread have been helpful and saved some time. I think we are going to try to play once on the drive down and once on the way back. Looking at Bear Trace @ Harrison Bay, Canyon Ridge, or Nob North. Trip report to follow.

If you're going to be on 75 I would recommend trying to get on Tennessee national. Well worth whatever the guest fee is.

Another interesting place off 75 would be springbrook cc in niota. It's a private course but you can get a tee time if you call. Basically a muni with the private name for namesake only. Really fun course to play. Several drivable par fours and short par 5's.

If u are coming from Nashville, play Bear trace @ Tims Ford. Best of the Bear trace courses in my opinion.. Once on I75 South look at Stonebridge in Rome and Barnsley gardens...

I second this post, these would be 3 great courses

no issues getting on nob north now.

Canyon ridge is clutch july-Septemebr. cant beat the 10 degree temperature drom and $40 greens fee

Stay away from bear trace @ Harrison bay! Played on 3-30-16 and the greens are horrendous. Some of the worst greens I've played and for what they charge should be ashamed. Really disappointed in the conditions for the last couple years. $50-$60 is a joke.

Thanks to all for the replies and suggestions. Played Canyon Ridge on Monday. Amazing views and well worth the $38 greens fee. Course shape was average, they aerated recently, but still very much worth it for the price + views.

Thanks for this, we were planning on heading there on the way back tomorrow. I will look at the others.

NOt sure where your coming from, but if youre south, try stonebridge in rome

if youre north try bear trace cumberland mountain, or tims ford.

harrison bay is an excellent course, with a few problem spots, but generaly, in the best condition in the area, of public courses that is.

Sorry I just saw this...

We had an issue over the winter of 14/15 with one of our greens (5). One of the covers blew off in high wind and we lost around 2500sq ft of green space on that green as a result. We resodded that section June 2015 and it has fully recovered since.

Our rates changed last year. It's now $50 (cart included) to play 18 during a weekend, $45 during the week. $70 will get you all day plus a cart.

There's a temporary clubhouse and restroom on site in the functional sense and we're working on building our infrastructure over the next couple of years to make Sweetens a destination for people traveling from outside of the area.....it's going to be fun watching it grow.

Conditioning wise I would put what we had out here last summer/fall up against anything public or private in the area. I get a lot of industry play from the area and conditioning is always something people praise.

My apologies you saw the course in less than stellar conditions. Next time you're in the area please shoot me a PM and I will be sure to take care of your round.

Played Sweetens two weeks ago and absolutely loved it. Was driving through Chattanooga and decided to make a quick pit stop for nine holes and now I can't wait to go back. Even the morning after a heavy rain, the course was in great shape and it's just a pure golf course. The course, and not the clubhouse/amenities, is the focus and it was a really enjoyable round.

Sweetens is what it is. It's a great golf course. If you want an awesome clubhouse and tennis courts and athletic facilities, those country clubs are out there. But they aren't $30 either.

when i played sweetens it was not 30 bucks. it was over 50. if you read all of my post you will see that there was a few issues that i had about the course, not just the lack of clubhouse. i'm not going to sugar coat things but i will give honest reviews. i had fun there which is the main thing. the lay out was cool but when about half of one green was furry, as in you could not putt on it, had to chip and when that plastic stuff that is under the sod is hanging out over a foot into the bunker that was not cool. the one gentleman who i guess runs the place said that those problems were addressed, cool. of course if i did not land in the bunker near that i would have never seen it.

fair critique if that's how you found it....

that being said, minus the semi-dormant bermuda, the course is in great shape now. you should try and play it in full bloom

Invited to a scramble at Moccasin Bend. Tried looking up the course but there is not a ton of info on their website. Any 'Nooga locals got any insight into conditions and what to expect around the end of September? Website says it is a bentgrass course but has bermuda fairways? My guess is they mean bent greens and bermuda fairways and tees. Just wondering if it is worth the three hour drive to get in on the scramble.

> Moccasin Bend is not worth a 3 hour drive even if it's free and free meal. I've only played it once about 25 years ago. The only thing I remember is it being next to the sewer plant. If playing with old friends you haven't seen in years, maybe. Like Johnny said, play Sweetens and Sewanee on way home.

Not free. No free meal. These aren't old friends.

Made that pretty easy.
