Aging and OWGR

In this era of fitness and "50 is the new 40 etc." I was surprised how few players over 50 are in the Top 200 Official World golf rankings.

Jiminez is in the top 40 and Singh at around 140 appear to be the only two.

Even if you look at those over 45 years old, you can add Stricker, Jerry Kelly and Bob Estes.

Would you have expected more? Are these 5 the ones you would have predicted still had world class games over age 45? Are you surprised Love, Couples, Perry, Langer are not near the top 200?

50 is the new 40 is something that the old guys tell themselves. You hear it across all sports but most athletes still fall off at the same points (exceptions for known drug cheats). Fitness helps the young guys just as much as the old ones as far as I can tell.

If you look at the PGA tour, you can play top level golf up til about 43 and then you start to drop off fast. Anyone can still have 4 good days and win a event but the margin for error shrinks fast. For ever guy over 40 that is winning events, there is a guy like Tom Watson (and maybe Tiger woods:)) who wins his last major before 35.

Looks like the Sony World Golf Ranking is either down or down and out. Maybe some revisions with the formula are on the way?

Age is not always a kind thing for golfers. Watson's Open run was amazing. Sam Snead finished 3rd behind Trevino and Nicklaus at the 1974 PGA Championship at the age of 62....Wow!

Consider Phil has a serious version of arthritis and he is 43 or so. He kicked ar*e at The Open last year and was pretty fit. He shot a 60 at TPC Waste Management and bagged the Scottish Open. Pretty impressive.

What Jimenez is doing to maintain his top 50 world ranking is beyond amazing given the high level of fitness of the young players and how long the golf courses are these days.

Vamos!

Personally I subscribe to the red wine theory.

The guy does with so much style, it is almost effortless. It looks like he is playing a relaxing round on Sunday.

I have always been a fan of great Spanish champions like Seve, rally champion Carlos Sainz and F1 champ Fernando Alonso plus Spain's World Cup maestros. They all have a real passion. Seve was electric.

Not sure of your age are but I never liked Seve in the old days. Now I understand how amazingly talented he was and how blessed we were to be able to watch his amazing skills. Watching him hit out of a greenside bunker with a 2 iron, was just humbling. Truly someone the game lost way before his time.

I am old enough to remember prime Seve and even as a kid I knew I was watching a once in a lifetime talent. I think he was perhaps the most gifted player of all time, or at least had the best hands of all time. I'm sure 2000 Tiger would have had the ability to beat Seve at his peak, but he wouldn't have drummed him like Tiger did to the fields in his hay day. Seve would have gone out honestly thinking he could win. Seve was such a competitor as well as a great player, he always believex he could win.

Hey all; i agree that there are some great golfers now in there 50's ,but with owgr points very low or non-existent on the champions tour do to smaller and not as deep a field as you get on the pga tour it's hard for someone on the champions tour to make up the points difference against the regular tour. Also as one person said "age catches up with everyone" Thanks :)

Those results are amazing but they are like Rory or Tiger blowing away the field by 10 shots. They happen but not very often.

but that also means that 40 is the new 30 & 30 is the new 20 ... so even the seasoned guys on tour stay sharp longer giving them the edge over the older guys ... basically its all relative ..

It's all in the pony tail. Jiminez is like Samspon (or from more recent times Seagal), his ponytail is the secret to his strength. If someone snuck up on him and cut off the ponytail he would drop out of the top 200 overnight.

If you want proof watch Seagals recen efforts minus ponytail compared to Under Seige and Out for Justice.
