The Links Lounge (*** NO POLITICS/RELIGION/LIV ***)

Sometimes I wonder what the general population thinks about. A couple of days ago the rangers found an abandoned camp fire. What are you thinking as we are in a drought and fire danger is extreme. And this is on the heels of a fire that blew up 5 miles east of town on the mountain. They don't know the exact cause, but they have ruled out natural causes. As of this morning, thanks to some cooler and wetter temps is now 25% contained. And fortunately for the many homes below the fire the prevailing winds blew it away from them. Friday night was like watching a movie from faraway. One spectator estimated the flames to be about 30' high as we watched it run up the mountain in the night sky. Welcome to the summer in the dry northern rockies. -

Playlist for "Golf" so I am not sure where I live on this music discussion: In order, Box of Rain (GD) next songs are Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, Kinks, Little Feat... Though there is a lot of hippie stuff and some newer stuff. -
Not uncommon at all. You have been doing this for a long time. The most avid players are oftentimes the one's who are too busy to do it. They (go ahead, throw me in there) go the the office and think about having the time to do it then when they have the time it isn't what they remembered. I think this is more common with folks who played as kids, and obviously skills decline when not in use. Don't play for a bit. It'll either come back to you or it won't. But I wouldn't be too bummed out about it. And, I have always said, expectation is a fun killer.

Well, since I didn't win it I can't say for sure, but the entry was $250 and the winner won $185 and I was pretty sure it was pro shop credit... at least that is what I was told. He was saying the last thing I need is another golf shirt which led me to think so. It could have been cash, but either way, the winning amount was a pittance.

Here is my thought, but perhaps our group are outliers. We took 8 to Pinehurst a couple of years ago. We had day money for the medalist, birdies and deuce pots, and then the team game was aggregated and everyone played everyone. But, and this is where it might differ from other serious golfers, we went to experience Pinehurst and have a hootenanny away from the grind of work. The golf is the reason for the trip (and the excuse) but it was more about hanging out and experiencing something new. Our handicaps were between 2-9 and one 15. We had a great time discussing the day money and frankly, when it came time for the Ryder Cup portion it was meh in regards to generating the conversation most golfers enjoy.

The rules committee has gone round and round on this for this very reason. The logic is the cart path runs around the hole at the clubhouse and is maybe 10 yards from the back of the green so there isn't a ton of space. It used to be staked but because of the curvature of the path they were losing some green space unless they put the stakes up 5' apart, but that was a PITA for the grounds crew because the aesthetic of mown grass at the clubhouse was important. Anyway, I thank everyone who has chimed in and helped me and my understanding of the rules because the ultimate ruling from the pro shop didn't jibe with my thoughts but without a rule book and these guys were slow, slow, slow I wasn't going to ask the guy to play two balls in (on this hole) and then find out after the round.

Our little hippie hamlet has put a moratorium on new dispensary licenses. A town of our population should support (and I don't remember the exact figures) say 35 of them and we have about 80. It seems like every corner has one, it's really quite wild. It's funny. It is completely legal here for all uses, but even then, people will drink publicly but on the golf course all my buddies use one hitters. The only time its obvious is when we are playing multiple groups and the job of the first guy is to leave a joint on the #17 tee marker and a lighter for the following groups. The last group picks it up so no one knows it's happening. It just goes to show the prevailing attitudes (based on its illegality for all those years) haven't quite caught up to the legalities of it. OTOH, when we were in CA in 2018, everywhere we played except LACC and MPCC we smelled it. -
The line is right along the edge of the grass. It was just easier to do that rather than spraying it every 3 days when it was in the grass. So grass is in, the cart path is the boundary and demarcated with the line.

MT has the ability for citizen referendum. Via those we have recreational weed and women’s healthcare. No way it would get through the elected legislature. -
He's a pro. I am guy who slaps the ball around and chases it. He should have (and does) more expertise or knowledge than I do.
-
I noted that, but wanted to read the whole thing and it started with ball in the hazard. Again, I thought that was the case, but capitulated based on the pros expertise.
-
It appears 16 seems to imply the ball is in a hazard. This wasn't a hazard, it was simply moving slow enough to roll into the tree well and rest right against a tree that is not in a hazard but it part of the course. When we walked around the tree and saw his ball sitting there, with no shot to the green (its a 70' tree) and really no way to play it without hitting it OOB I figured just as if it is a fence (or whatever impediment OOB the player doesn't get relief), but the ruling was he did get free relief because a cart path is a cart path regardless of where it is. I felt like this was a misinterpretation of the rules, as I understood them, but it appears I know more than I thought.
-
Exactly, so I don't want to say which I am leaning in the two rules decisions and possibly influence the response. But because the cart path is OB it could either be it isn't germane to the ruling, or the ruling could be the cart path is considered a cart path regardless, and in which case, the player would get a free drop.
-
No issue, I thought I knew the answer, but then the pro picked a different answer and I am just wondering what folks thought which is why I felt a little squirrely about the answer. The assistant pro didn't know so he had to call out to the head pro for the final decision. I realize it is a gray line (at least to me) but just wanted to pick the brains of the rules illuminati.
-
Quick question. This weekend my opponent hit the ball out of bounds... but it bounced off the building and nestled against a tree trunk in bounds about 12" from the OB line painted on the cart path. Starting here, we know the ball is in play, but this is where I get a little squirrely and I am not complaining about the ruling, but wanted others to reflect on what they think. The player, in order to hit the ball would have to stand on the cart path to execute his shot, effectively standing OB. One school of thought is, because it is a cart path and the player gets relief with no penalty. The other school is, the cart path is out of bounds and therefore is not part of the course and subsequently the player would not be entitled to a free drop and must play the ball as it lies. What do the rules illuminati think?

The weekend is complete, and given the format of the member guest the last day is really the only day that matters if you haven't shot your way out of it the first two days. We were hanging tough on the last day, and then I went into a mental tailspin, through no fault of my own except for my inability to be mentally tough. We were paired with a couple youngsters and this is how it started. We start birdie/par. Their cart is bumping what I can only describe (and I made this up) gangster country, it's loud. And then god bless em, and weed is legal, they get a little overly tuned up. So not only is Luke Bryan accosting our ears, three holes in they ask what they shot and what we shot (this was repeated a number of times over the round). And, as they are incapable of stringing together coherent thoughts we are now 2 holes behind after 3 holes. They had friends following us, and finally after 7 holes I told my partner, this is excruciating and I am going to drink and not focus on my play which as many know can have a benefit to my game. I was 5 over on the front, 2 over on the back and I had 7 GIR but the misses weren't where they should have been so that was disappointing. Now, I have painted a picture of Hades for all golf enthusiasts on this board, but I also have to say they were great kids. Really nice, but just didn't get the assignment for the tournament and it wasn't my job to give them the assignment. Decent golfers, but their music sucked and they can't handle their THC. As I said to the pro who asked how it went after the end of it, knowing how it went because of the POP, "When my buddies get a little too stoned it's funny and endearing, but when someone I don't know really well goes into that morass it is frustrating." -

Isn’t it weird. 50 years later if you put these bands into a queue based on greatness and this is so different than the lineup. -

At the party my wife said exactly this. If there is a "couples trip" and the guys play golf P3P is going solo because it was bad enough just to hear about the course, and she couldn't imagine listening to eight idiots doing the same thing. Some of the women were actually in agreement, at least publicly, I am sure behind the scenes they may have been saying it can't be that bad and they would like to go. -

Leave em home. I have had to drag my wife to Scotland and Ireland, and while she was bored being in some small town all alone for 5 hours, she would do it again. Though, and it actually came up again at a party this weekend, I was complaining when I talk overseas I get the same pushback even though there is no woman alive who wants to fly that far, walk around in the wind and rain, and then have dinner with 4-8 guys who are yammering on about the awful golf they played. -

As a kid, just based on the look of the course I always thought it was the easiest golf. No trees, why aren't they doing better? Having tried it a few times, it is tough. Fun but tough. -
There really is no easy answer, and be thankful you aren't the organizer. In this situation, and it sounds like it's a private game (not put on the course), the organizer either has to pull him aside and explain the situation or have the guy in the group who doesn't shy away from those uncomfortable conversation talk to him. Then it's up to him, if he wants to continue to play he has to ride and play faster, and he still insists on walking then he can find a different group. We have had a pretty set game which consistently gets 16 players and over the past 10 years there have certainly people who have been disappeared from the text chain. Invariably it just hasn't been a fit with our group of guys. Could be POP, could be personality, could be anything, but once the bulk of the guys say something about it, they are gone if there is no change. And for what it's worth, I can only think of one guy who had the talk and made noticeable changes.
